๐ซ๐ฎ FINNISH FLUENCY LAB
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are the answers to questions often asked by Finnish learners, curious humans and the occasional reindeer with a working camera.
1. What exactly is Finnish Fluency Lab? ๐ฒ
Finnish Fluency Lab is guided online speaking practice for adults learning Finnish.
You meet other learners in small groups and use structured speaking materials to keep the conversation moving.
It gives you a regular place to speak, listen, respond and start using the Finnish you already know.
2. Is Finnish Fluency Lab a Finnish lesson? ๐ฒ
No.
Finnish Fluency Lab is guided speaking practice, not a traditional Finnish lesson.
There is no live grammar teaching, correction, vocabulary teaching or detailed language explanation during the sessions. The guidance is built into the session materials.
You learn by using Finnish.
3. Is live support available during the sessions? ๐ฒ
Yes and no.
Yes, technical help is available. If you cannot see the materials, need help returning to reception or encounter another problem during the session, use the Raise Hand button or return to the main room to receive assistance.
No, live teaching, correction, grammar explanations and vocabulary explanations are not provided during the conversation.
4. Who can join Finnish Fluency Lab? ๐ฒ
Finnish Fluency Lab is for adults who want to become more comfortable speaking Finnish.
Different levels are supported, from beginners who need plenty of ready-made support to more advanced learners who want to develop longer, more natural conversations.
You do not need to speak perfectly. That would rather defeat the point.
5. What if I am unsure of my level? ๐ฒ
No problem.
Choose the room where you think you will feel most comfortable.
If the level does not feel right, return to reception and you can move to another room. You are not trapped there.
6. How large are the speaking groups? ๐ฒ
Each speaking room has a maximum of four adults.
This gives everyone time to speak, listen and take part without getting lost in a large group.
7. How does the speaking practice work? ๐ฒ
At beginner levels, one person begins by reading the question and the available answers aloud. Everyone then takes a turn answering before a different person begins the next prompt.
More advanced learners can use the prompts as starting points for longer answers, examples, opinions and follow-up questions.
Prompts are prepared for each level and change every session, so you can join every session and get different practice every time.
Please remember, the aim is not to race through the prompts. It is to speak, listen, repeat, notice patterns and allow time for balanced conversation.
8. What can Finnish Fluency Lab help me improve? ๐ฒ
Regular speaking practice helps you activate the Finnish you already know and become more comfortable retrieving it during a real conversation.
As you read, speak, listen and respond, useful vocabulary begins to build, often like magic, and your brain becomes better at noticing recurring language patterns.
You also gain experience answering questions, expressing your ideas and responding without having time to translate everything first.
9. Do I need to prepare before a session? ๐ฒ
No.
There is no homework and nothing to prepare.
Turn up, choose your level and start speaking. Finnish Fluency Lab gives you a way to keep learning through use without adding another course or more homework to your week.
10. Will Finnish Fluency Lab help me prepare for the YKI test? ๐ฒ
Yes.
Finnish Fluency Lab is not a complete YKI preparation course, but it complements YKI preparation through regular, structured speaking practice.
Across the sessions, topics draw on everyday situations and broad subject areas relevant to the YKI test. You practise building answers, expressing opinions, responding in real time and developing useful vocabulary.
11. How does Finnish Fluency Lab membership work? ๐๏ธ
Membership gives you access to the Finnish Fluency Lab calendar.
The calendar shows all available live sessions. You can RSVP to the sessions that suit your schedule and join flexibly throughout your membership month.
New sessions are added to the calendar as they become available.
12. What does Finnish Fluency Lab membership include? ๐๏ธ
Membership gives you access to the Finnish Fluency Lab calendar.
The calendar currently includes:
A Tuesday evening session from 18:00 to 19:00 Finnish time.
A Thursday morning session from 10:00 to 11:00 Finnish time.
You can RSVP to the sessions that suit your schedule and join flexibly throughout your membership period.
New sessions will be added according to learner demand.
13. Do I have to attend every session? ๐๏ธ
No.
That is why you receive access to the calendar. You can see what is available and RSVP whenever your schedule allows.
Attend one session, several sessions or all of them. It is entirely up to you.
14. Can I join after the month has already started? ๐๏ธ
Yes.
Contact me here and I will let you know what is available and which membership start date will work for you.
15. What happens when my membership period ends? ๐๏ธ
You decide whether you want to continue.
You can renew with the same membership or choose a different membership period. If you do not want to continue, you simply do not renew.
16. How do I pay? ๐๏ธ
After completing the registration form, you will receive an invoice by email, normally within 12 hours.
Once payment has been received, your Finnish Fluency Lab membership will be approved and your calendar access will be sent to you by email.
Invoices are securely processed by PayPal but can be paid using a debit or credit card.
17. Do I need to keep my camera on? ๐ป
Yes.
Finnish Fluency Lab is a live conversation between real people. Feedback from participants shows that sessions feel more relaxed, connected and natural when everyone can see one anotherโs faces and reactions.
For that reason, cameras are expected to remain on. The same approach applies to everyone and helps create a welcoming shared experience.
If you briefly need to step away, you can turn your camera off and turn it back on when you return. If you are unable to use your camera during the session, you may be removed from the session.
18. What if I have technical problems? ๐ป
Use the Raise Hand button or return to the main room (by leaving the breakout room) if you encounter a problem during the session.

Please check your internet connection, camera, microphone and Zoom before joining. Finnish Fluency Lab cannot accept responsibility for technical problems with your equipment or internet connection.
19. Are refunds provided? ๐ป
Finnish Fluency Lab membership begins as soon as your payment has been received and your membership access has been provided.
Refunds are not normally provided once membership has begun, except where required by applicable consumer law. If you have a statutory right to withdraw and the service has already begun, any refund may be reduced to reflect the membership access and services already provided.
To request a cancellation or exercise an applicable withdrawal right, please contact me in writing.
Refunds, partial refunds and credits are not provided for:
- Sessions you miss.
- Technical problems at your end.
- Being unable to participate because your camera is unavailable.
- Unused months within a two-month or three-month membership.
20. Does this method work for everyone? ๐ป
Yes and no.
There is plenty of evidence that using a language helps you learn it. Repetition makes unfamiliar structures more familiar, and speaking helps turn language you recognise into language you can actually use.
You can check some of the science behind Finnish Fluency Lab here.
Finnish Fluency Lab receives consistently excellent feedback, but different approaches suit different people.
Give it a go. If you never try, you will never know.
21. Can I join using a mobile phone? ๐ฑ
Yes.
You can join using a mobile phone, provided that:
- Your camera remains on during the session.
- Your microphone works properly.
- You can access the Zoom chat.
- You can clearly see the shared session materials.
- You have a reliable internet connection.
- You are using an up-to-date version of the Zoom app.
A laptop or tablet is preferred because the larger screen makes it easier to see the materials, use the chat and take part in the conversation.
However, a mobile phone is absolutely fine if you can meet the technical requirements. Please position it somewhere stable so that the other participants can see you properly.
22. Where should I join the session from? ๐ป
Join from a quiet, suitable location where you can speak freely, keep your camera on and focus on the other participants.
Please do not join while driving, travelling, shopping, working or trying to complete other tasks.
Finnish Fluency Lab is relaxed, but it is still a live language-learning session. Everyone should be able to give the conversation and the other participants their attention.
